A Journey through Europe
talking life, death and grief

[our mission]

What happens when a person dies?
And what do we need when we grieve –
in the past, today, and in the future?

[Our Mission]

What happens when we die

Death and dying is the essence of being human. How do people die in europe, what differs and what stays the same, depending on where you look.

How do people grieve

How are relatives and friends mourn the dead. How is life celebrated in the face of loss? We meet people and institutions to find out more.

What is shared

What connects us with each other and our culture. Europe is a vast space with various cultures and visions, yet many ways are shared when it comes to death and loss.

We travel across Europe and speak with bereaved families and with those who carry responsibility when life ends. We document procedures, rituals, and attitudes.

Much is different.
Some things are shared.

In the end, it comes down to the same question everywhere:
How we shape farewell – and how we, as a society, live with loss.

This project will tell stories through interviews, videos and still images, not offering answers but posing questions to the participants and viewers alike.

[Who we are]

Eric Wrede

funeral director, author, podcaster

How do people grieve, what stories and habits connect us and what differs throughout europe? Those are questions that I want to ask people in this project.

Felix Seyfert

photographer

Death, dying, life and celebration are so tightly connected. I'm looking forward exploring the various approaches and capture these moments throughout europe.
